Last week I presented a workshop on Social Media, Networks, and Learning, as well as the Yap-Robben Model of Leveraging Social Learning Technologies in Corporate Environments for the Canadian Society for Training and Development [London Chapter]. The participants had the opportunity to dialogue on the pros/cons of social media, social networks, and social learning.
We started with a discussion on Social Networking. For those who may need a refresher of what social networking is about, check out what Lee and Sachi Lefever put this together.
We then talked about Albert Bandura’s Social Learning theory [Attention-Retention-Reproduction-Motivation].

A live collaboration presentation with my co-researchers and friends, Jeffrey Keefer and Joost Robben [via Adobe Connect] followed. We discussed Lilia Efimov’s blogging practices of knowledge workers and moved onto how a notion and an insight can transform into a research dialogue onto a usable material for workplace learning.
The following is a set of links I’ve discussed in the session as well as additional references. Note that this is not by any means an exhaustive list of these services but a flavour of what is out there for you to have a dialogue with your teams at work when you make your decisions regarding implementation of social learning technologies:

After reading all of this and you sigh and say to yourself “I’ve had it with social networking?” then you can delete your online presence using either the Suicide Machine or Seppukoo. I don’t suggest it but maybe some of you want to just not worry about social learning.
A shortened version of my presentation deck is below:
My Categories of Online Social Communication – now some of these are mashed up so I may sometimes put them in categories where we primarily use them but they have other features as well that may well put them in other categories. So decide accordingly and make sure you know the features of the software that you will require for your organization.
