What's your learning asset maintenance strategy?

A colleague of mine, Marcello Bigotti, and I recently spoke at the 2010 Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Training and Development on the topic of Learning Assets and the strategy in managing them. Most of you, instructional designers, are probably already using avatars as learning assets. Avatar has a specific meaning in current eLearning literature but we have a simple definition that works for us that you can find in our presentation below.
Bottom line of our presentation is this – if you are going to use photo, audio, video, etc. as learning assets in the form of avatars, make sure that you maintain it through an internal database of photos, audio, video, etc. THEN to kick it up a notch, create a back-story to weave all your avatars together. That way you create a microcosm of what your organization’s makeup look like. It would make for an easier management (no redundant graphics for two different case scenarios – we’ve all seem to have done this before – see last pages of the presentation) of your learning assets.
Do go through the presentation, post your comment below and let’s have a discussion. Let me know what your learning asset management strategy looks like.
